a note on goitrogens

cruciferous vegetables, also commonly known in the thyroid community as goitrogens, are thyroid-inhibiting foods that can slow and/or block the absorption of the hormone. they can also potentially lead to a goiter, which, really, who wants one of those?

the ironic thing for us thyroidians is that cruciferous vegetables happen to be among the best for liver detox. the sulphuric compounds work wonders at cleansing the system.  these compounds are, more specifically, phytonutrients and antioxidants.

i will be eating cruciferous vegetables during this detox, but only in strict moderation and also cooked very thoroughly.  if you’ve had a chance to read my “Goitrogens and Soy, A Double Oy” via How To Kick Your Thyroid’s Ass, you’ll have the basic background info you need regarding these foods, however, no one is sure just how much cooking is required to eliminate the goitrogenic properties. some people claim it kills them all, other sources claim it kills most. i err on the side of caution and, again, cook such foods thoroughly and also limit my total intake.
